Hi Carl,

are you still developing CW?

I would love to throw a pile of suggestions and bug reports at you

but would like to know if you are still working on CW or doing something else (maybe re-designing it)?

If i'm allowed to i would like to list the thing i'd need to finally switch from AmigaWriter...right now there are too many limitations in CW

Please let me know

Thanks a lot

Wanted features:: File format
Hi Claus!

Here is the reply from PageStream Author Deron Katzmaier
for my question about file format description.
Hope you could use it to investigate that format.

Lazar Zoltan wrote:
> Hello Deron!
>
> If I remember correctly the documentation of PageStream's
> document format was released to the public before.
> There is a simple word processor is developed for OS4 called
> Cinnamon Writer.
>
> http://desler.be/modules/wfchannel/index.php
>
> I would like to recommend the author to investigate and use
> PageStream's file format to store documents, however I can
> not find it on the PageStream site.
>
> Could you upload it or point me to to a link?
>
> Kind regards
>
Hi Lazar.

The file format is documented at
http://www.pagestream.org/showdocs.php?id=1279! I found it with search,
but found out it was linked into the table of contents improperly. That
should be fixed now.

However, IFF DOC (the pagestream file format), is better suited to a DTP
program / drawing program than a word processor. Depending on the needs,
IFF CTXT (the text format used for PageStream articles) may be better
suited. It would be easy (and permisible within the IFF structure) to
extend CTXT to need most additional needs. In fact, merging some IFF DOC
chunks into CTXT to document a more "freeform" word processor format may
be a good mix. IFF DOC (the document level structure), ILUS (the page
level drawing structure) and CTXT (the text/article level structure) is
all documented there. It is a little out of date, but that is a simple
things to remedy if someone is actually going to use it.

Anyway, just ideas. The developer is welcome to contact me or simple
scan the documentation as they see fit.

Deron

Wanted features:: Lots of suggestions.
Hi Claus, and thanks. A really good Amiga WP has been my wish for a long time now.

I believe we need some lateral thinking, and try not to repeat the mistakes of other WPs approaches that are so limited.

Their problem is that WYSIWYG was the main objective for so long, that once having obtained it, all the rest got stuck on.

The trick is to take WYSIWYG as established, something that can be improved along the way, but not the real objective. For you in the middle of things getting each graphical feature right, that may feel like the overwhelming problem.

On the other hand if the objective is to have an all round text processing package, where gopod graphics might be part of editing rather than printing, and the making it WYSIWYG in terms of typeface, graphics, layout etc., as just one option amongst many. That may be a very healthy approach to my mind. A cross between a very powerful text editor and a word processor and perhaps as a tag compositor as well.

One thing for sure all that cannot be done with an overloaded GUI (function rich) and a bloated monolithic WP.

I really like what I am seeing.

Your thought on making a script nexus between the WP engine, plugins, independent functions and the GUI, this is vital.

Please, when you have the time take a thorough look at Lua, ignore Python and all the rest, see how Lua works and I think you will find it just what you want.

Mozzila's XUL is now an independent package worth thinking about (a big port however) Rogue has recently talked of a Unix library handler in the new yet to be released OS4, which may open possiblities for a quicker port.

Personally I do not like the way XUL handles scripts, but there is no deny there is a wealth of tools available, and you only load what you need.

There is also a number of Lua widgets and other graphical GUI components that may be a lot more useful.

Anti Grain is fantastic!!!!

I could not get my head around how they were doing GUIs, but that would be great, and very versatile, plus the rendering, of graphics and typefaces (I could not work out how this could be done for a WP - but I would be tempted to recast the whole thing within anti-grain if that was possible.

Very exciting.

When you get a chance, and are interested I would love to talk in detail about handling XML through stylesheets rather than tags.

Some ideas I would prefer to keep confidential, so if interested post me, but I will discuss most other things openly.

Thanks for your response, I am glad some things are making sense to someone else - this has been a hobby horse of mine for sometime now.

Wanted features:: Printing support and Paper sized graphics dimensions
Hi Jahc
The paper sized dimensions is something that will be included in next version of CW. The printing feature is a little problematic though. I agree with you that it is a necesity, but I will be without my amiga for 6 months and are forced to develop on my Ibook. It will however come in some form at some point in the development

I'm going to donate on a regular basis whenever I can, and I urge everyone else to do so too! We gotta motivate the author to make Cinnamon the best WP for next-gen Amigas. This is a gap in our software base that needs to be filled!

My first donation is coming in 1-2 weeks, if no unexpected bills pop up here.
